A beautiful spike bloom sometimes 18 inches in length, gives this flower an ethereal quality. It will be a hub of pollinator activity all summer and come fall and winter, birds will perch on it and feast on the seed. It is wonderfully structural and deer are uninterested in it! It is present and native in NYS but endangered and rare. There are only about 10-12 wild patches left in NYS. All the more reason to add it to your yard! There were many historical records from Long Island and western New York which have not been found or are considered extirpated. Habitat development and invasive species in naturally disturbed areas have probably reduced the species over the last 100 years.
