This plant is the embodiment of the native plant mantra, ‘if you build it they will come’. It is the larval host plant to the American Lady and Painted Lady Butterflies. During the first season while my plants were tiny, I spotted a Painted Lady Butterfly laying her eggs. Refer to photo #2 to see the caterpillars in year two! Every year now, the adults have laid eggs on my plants and the caterpillars wean on this plant. It does get a bit defoliated at the beginning of the summer but then recovers quickly. This plant has wonderful foilage and fills in like a ground cover in areas of dry sun. The flowers look great in dried flower arrangements.
