Pussytoes (Antennaria plantaginifolia) is an excellent ground cover, especially on gravel or sandy soils. I see it commonly along Rob’s Trail and around Kennedy Bog at Mendon Ponds, and growing in sandy openings all over the area. Can be used as an alternative lawn because it spreads across the ground the same way that wild strawberries do. Pussytoes look best when interplanted with clump grasses or other flowers like Prairie Smoke. It is an important nectar source for early emerging, small solitary bees and larval host for the American Painted Lady
