A very early bloomer, its flowers coincide with the last of the ephemerals. The tubular flowers are perfectly adapted to attract and feed hummingbirds, especially the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird during their spring migration north, providing nectar. It is also a larval host plant to the Columbine Duskywing Butterfly.
