This plant is the only true host for the endangered Blue Karner Butterfly. Western Lupine, which has hybridized with some native populations and is commonly sold in commercial nurseries, does not host the Blue Karner Butterfly larvae. There are still a few of the local and native, non hybridized populations here in the Rochester Area. Otherwise this plant is a beauty and a nitrogen fixer as well! It is found in sandy meadows and sandy uplands and edges. In a yard it needs well drained soil and does not do well in clay soil.
