Pagoda Dogwood is the only dogwood with alternate instead of opposite leaves. It grows in flat, horizontal tiers or levels and stretches outward giving it a wide appearance. It grows fast and 2 ft a year and tops out at about 20 feet. Being an understory tree, it does well in shade and looks great under a tall evergreen screen. It also gets beautiful blue berries on red stems that songbirds enjoy in the fall and it is a host to the Spring Azure Butterfly. It is more of a small tree than a shrub and though it doesn’t need much pruning, the bottom can be pruned to accentuate the trunk if there is branching along the bottom.
