This shrub is a great replacement for Burning Bush if you are missing that pop of red in the fall- though unlike Burning Bush it has high ecological value (and isn’t invasive of course!). Small Carpenter Bees tunnel into the stems to create their nests. The Spring Azure and the Red-banded Hairstreak use Fragrant Sumac as a host plant. During the winter, when food sources are limited, birds visit the shrub to eat the berries. When crushed the leaves emit a delightful spicy, lemon smell.
