Wool Grass is a densely-tufted, clump-forming perennial, 4-6 ft. high, with an erect stem that is leafy up to the flower cluster. Clumps form from spreading rhizomes. As the seed develops, it turns reddish brown and has a wool-like appearance that is very attractive from August through October. It is an important wetland species providing food and cover for water fowl and marsh dwellers.
