There is a Goldenrod for every condition. In fact there over 100 Goldenrod Species native to  North America. Gray Goldenrod (Solidago nemoralis), according to esteemed landscape designer, Benjamin Vogt, is your match if you have blazing hot sand or gravel soil.  It is only about 2 foot tall and is well behaved. It is perfect for slopes or barren areas where little else will grow. Like all Goldenrods, it is a keystone species and does not cause fall allergies because it is not a wind pollinated species (Looking at you Ragweed!).
