Monarch butterflies require goldenrod as late-season nectar source providing essential fuel for their long fall migration to Mexico, alongside milkweed (their caterpillar food) and asters. Stiff goldenrod is one of the preferred nectar source for Monarchs. It isn't an allergy culprit (ragweed is), and supports general pollinator health, making it a keystone plant for a robust monarch habitat. This species of Goldenrod produces copious amounts of seed. The birds will enjoy it through the winter but if you feel it is spreading too much you can cut the seed heads off and share the seeds with friends!
